INTRODUCTION
I believe that if we used natural therapies more often as a first choice for front-line medicine (non-emergency situations), instead of drugs and surgery, we would be a much happier and healthier society. Pharmaceutical drugs and surgery, while life-saving and necessary at times, more often than not, contribute to poor health, toxic bodies and minds, as well as unwanted side effects. Quite often, drugs and surgery do not address the underlying cause of illness. Instead, they often act as "bandaids" to temporarily help symptoms. The underlying cause of symptoms, in my opinion, can be found 95 % of the time in the imbalance of one (and often more) of the 6 key components of health.
GENETICS AND HEALTH
We all have our own unique genetic susceptibilities for certain weaknesses, but we are much more than our genetic make-up. For the vast majority of us, genetics do not dictate our health. We can dictate and be the authors of our own fantastic health if we choose to be. It is truly amazing how many people believe that they suffer from a particular condition because a family member has the condition. They go on to believe that the condition is "a genetic problem". Conditions such as depression, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, obesity, (and the list goes on and on) are common problems that many people believe are dictated by genetics. Yes, genetic susceptibility plays a role, however, the most common causes of these diseases are not genetics, but are the imbalance and inattention to many, if not all of the 6 key components of health.
WHAT ARE NATURAL THERAPIES?
The list is endless. When a patient says to me: "I've tried every therapy", I smile inside. I do this because the natural therapies that I know and practise on a regular basis constitute a proverbial "drop in the bucket" of the totality of natural therapies available for healing. After obtaining knowledge about natural therapies over my 25-year medical experience, I am sure there exist more natural therapies that I am not aware of, then those that I am familiar with. I believe that there is an answer for everyone in order that they may heal. The journey is about finding which of the natural therapies work best for you.
The list of natural therapies includes naturopathic medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathic medicine, massage therapy, chiropractic medicine, acupuncture, chelation therapy, healing touch, counselling, structural integration, art therapy, music therapy, reiki, somatics, and an infinite number of others.
Natural therapies have many things in common. Natural therapies stimulate the body's own ability to heal itself and are gentle with little to no side effects. They address the root cause of illness rather than suppress symptoms. Finally, natural therapies offer the largest contribution to the prevention of illness and disease in the healthcare arena.
Most importantly, whatever works for you is always best, be it aromatherapy or a gentle osteopathic manoeuvre. No one natural therapy works well for everyone because we are all unique in our own way. Discover your own unique way of responding and healing and determine what natural therapy or combination of natural therapies work best for you.
NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
Obviously, being a naturopathic physician, I have a bias towards naturopathic medicine and I believe it to be the most effective, science-based, holistic form of therapy available. For more information see American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (USA), Canadian Naturopathic Association (Canada), www.wanp.org (Washington state), www.canp.org (California), www.hawaiind.org (Hawaii), www.bcna.ca (British Columbia), www.oand.org (Ontario) or www.naturopathic-alberta.com (Alberta).
HEALTHY HABITS
The Naturally Empowered Health Shake consumed on a regular basis is one of the best ways I know of that contributes to the prevention of illness and disease, and greatly enhances the experience of fantastic health. I personally consume this drink 4 or 5 days per week.
Many of my patients have homeopathic kits and use the book "Homeopathic Medicine At Home" to successfully treat themselves, their families, and their pets for common ailments. By doing so, they cut down the number of visits to healthcare professionals (including myself), and learn to be their own front-line healthcare provider.
There are a handful of cold and flu remedies that I have found to be extremely useful. I store these in my medicine cupboard at home and I encourage my patients to do the same.
After a course of antibiotics, the most effective way that I have witnessed the prevention of antibiotic-induced illnesses is by using HMF Replete or HMF Super Powder following the termination of the antibiotic treatment.
Are all vitamins and minerals created equal? I don't believe so. No doubt you will decide for yourself. There are many exceptional high quality nutrients available on the market. I recommend that you take your vitamins and minerals in the form of capsules or liquids, and not tablets as the former are much better absorbed.
By far, the best multivitamins that I recommend to patients, take myself, and give to my children are Maxum Multi Vite, Super Matragen and Children's Chewables.
I much prefer using ossien microcrystalline calcium hydroxyapatite as a source of calcium to strengthen bones than any other source of calcium. Through my own clinical observations, this is the source that is most effective for this purpose and is the source that I personally consume and give to my children. This type of calcium can be found in Super Cal Mag and Ortho Bone for adults, and Calcium Apatite Chewable for children. For those with osteopenia and osteoporosis, I strongly recommend the beneficial experience of seeking the advice of a naturopathic physician.
Effectively Managing Stress
In my clinical experience, I have witnessed many people effectively deal with stress and life challenging situations utilizing the category of NATURAL THERAPIES.
The top three ways that I have seen are as follows:
- Many people find that using the Bach Flower medicine called Rescue Remedy helps them experience a gentle feeling of calmness. A few drops under the tongue can be taken as needed, whether it is every 10 minutes or once daily.
- Seeking some type of bodywork therapy like massage or healing touch helps release tension that has been stored within the body's tissues.
- Seeking the advice of a naturopathic physician to strengthen the body's stress-coping glands and organ systems is extremely useful in order to: a) balance the hormone system including ovaries, testes, adrenal glands, thyroid, pancreas and pituitary gland; b) balance the nervous system using high dose amino acid therapy, minerals, herbal medicine and homeopathic medicine. Each person is unique in this regard and requires an individualized treatment plan.
The healthiest and happiest people I have ever seen are those that have a desire to seek what is imbalanced, and take action to find their own balance by taking charge of their health.
